Sound analysis

Refers to the extraction of information and meaning from sound signals for classification, storage, retrieval and synthesis. Different types of sound, for example voice and music, can be analysed in different ways.

Voice analysis is often used in the fields of speech recognition and speaker identification, as well as for medical purposes, to determine the cause of voice problems. It can also be used to determine the emotional state of a speaker, and whether or not they are telling the truth. Methods for voice analysis include:

  • Inverse filtering: recorded audio is filtered mathematically to produce an estimate of the waveform, from which the movement of the vocal folds can be deduced
  • Electroglottography (EGG): electrodes are placed on the throat to record changes in its conductivity as the vocal folds move

Additionally, voice analysis software is used in animation to create accurate lip-synching, ensuring that the visual aspect matches the soundtrack.

In spectral music, or ‘spectralism’, the music is composed using computer-based mathematical sound spectrum analysis, by visualising various features of the sound spectrum, interconnecting and transforming them. The particular type of analysis used to achieve this is the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).

Programming languages, such as Nyquist, can be used to analyse and synthesise different sounds by combining functions and typing expressions. Such sounds include synthesised musical instruments in MIDI format.
