project: Reanimating cultural heritage: digital repatriation, knowledge networks and civil society strengthening in post-conflict Sierra Leone

This multidisciplinary project is concerned with innovating 'digital curatorship' in relation to Sierra Leonean collections dispersed in the global museumscape. Extending research in anthropology, museum studies, informatics and beyond, the project considers how objects that have become isolated from the oral and performative contexts that originally animated them can be reanimated in digital space alongside associated images, video clips, sounds, texts and other media, and thereby given new life. The project provides recordings of performances by British and Irish musicians made between 1900 and 1950. owing to changes in company policy in the 1930s, their work was gradually excluded and mush of it forgotten. MBI is accessible through an attractive online search interface that also gives access to the complete recorded output of the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (CHARM). Aims to promote the study of music as performance through a specific focus on recordings. Its activities include a major discographic project, seminars and research projects. Traditionally, music has been studied as a text reproduced in performance - almost as if it were an obscure kind of literature. By placing performance at the centre of musicology - by promoting a musicology based on recordings and not just scores - CHARM aims to reduce the gulf between musicology and the listener. project: The complete work of Charles Darwin online

Darwin Online is by far the largest Darwin publication in history. It contains over 40,000 pages of searchable text and 130,000 electronic images. This site contains at least one exemplar of all known Darwin publications, reproduced to the highest scholarly standards, both as searchable text and electronic images of the originals. All of Darwin's unpublished manuscripts are being scanned, transcribed or both. All previously published manuscript transcriptions are included (except where reproduction permission could not be obtained). [read more]

project: Electronic corpus of Lute music (ECOLM) II

ECOLM is a web-accessible user-friendly digital scholarly resource centred around the musicology of the lute. By means of a guided interface, it supplies professional and amateur users with effective and efficient search methods (using words or music as queries) over a database comprising over 2000 pieces of lute music, which can be retrieved, viewed in tablature and (given a suitable computer) played back, without the need to understand specialist computer code. Activated Space is a proposal to develop and present a series of installations that alter an architectural space to allow its resonant frequencies to become audible and interactive. The proposal combines elements from sculpture, electronic media, music, architecture and acoustics. research questions: Primary: How can active listening be encouraged? How does our awareness of acoustic surroundings influence our perceptions? What happens if you magnify the sound of a room? PARADISEC (the Pacific And Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures) offers a facility for digital conservation and access for endangered materials from the Pacific region, defined broadly to include Oceania and East and Southeast Asia. Our research group has developed models to ensure that the archive can provide access to interested communities, and conforms with emerging international standards for digital archiving. We have established a framework for accessioning, cataloguing and digitising audio, text and visual material, and preserving digital copies. [read more]
