Text encoding - presentational

Refers to the addition of character and symbols, or tags, at certain places in a text in order to convey information about its visual appearance. Presentational text encoding, or markup, is used in WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) word processing software, to display onscreen text with the desired formatting.

HTML also contains some presentational elements, such as <b>, <i> and <center>, as they describe how the output should appear, rather than why this appearance relates to the text’s structure or content. In XHTML such elements should not be used, in order to separate form and content; documents should instead be styled using CSS.

Related methods include: General website development, Text encoding – descriptive and Text encoding – referential.
