Text encoding - referential

Refers to the addition of character and symbols, or tags, at certain places in a text in order to convey information about external elements. These can include hypermedia, or hyperlinks that take the user further down the page, to other pages of the text (internal links), or to related documents (external links).

In XHTML, this is achieved by using the anchor <a href="...">...</a> element to link to the desired URL. XLink is used to create hyperlinks in XML documents. Hyperlinks can also be added when using software such as spreadsheets and WYSIWYG word processors.

Links can be unidirectional, where they simply link to the URL, or bidirectional, where the user can link back to the original URL.
