The James Madison Carpenter Collection of Traditional Song and Drama is one of the most important and extensive collections of its kind. The bulk of it comprises British material which Carpenter (1888-1983), a Harvard graduate, gathered in the period 1928-35. The remainder comprises material gathered from various parts of the USA and probably dates from immediately after this period. [read more]

project: French Vernacular Books: A Short-Title Catalogue of Books in the French language published before 1601

The St Andrews French Book Project intends to create an analytical bibliography of all books published in the French language before 1601. It is the first ever global survey of early French books, based on an exhaustive investigation of over 1550 libraries worldwide. It is also the first major national bibliographical project to have been designed and completed entirely in the electronic age. [read more]

project: London's Past Online: a bibliography of Greater London's history

London's Past Online aims to provide a free, searchable online database of books, articles and other published material relating to the Greater London area from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day. The work was undertaken by a research team based at the Centre for Metropolitan History. Core data was taken from Heather Creaton's 'Bibliography of Printed Works on London History to 1939' (LAPL, 1994) and its unpublished supplement, and the bibliography from her 'Sources for the History of London 1939-45' (BRA, 1998). project: The Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture

The aim of the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture (LAVC) project is to unlock the full research potential of the large and varied archive of the University's former Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies, now stored in the Brotherton Library’s Special Collections, by creating an innovative electronic resource. The core of the archive, on the dialect side, is the material generated by the well-known Survey of English Dialects, which gathered its raw materials primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. [read more]

The History of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama research project (1999-2004) operated under the aegis of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford. It has in many ways pioneered the developing discipline of Performance Reception. It has done this by documenting as comprehensively as possible all performances worldwide of Greek and Roman drama and their adaptations between the Renaissance and the present, while hand-in-hand with that also exploring ways of interpreting those findings and that material. project: The Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM)

The purpose of the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) is to obtain and archive directly-captured digital images of European sources of medieval polyphonic music. Where there is damage that makes these sources difficult to read, levels of digital restoration are also undertaken on copies of the original images to improve legibility and scholarly access. The project has created a new permanent electronic archive of these images, both to facilitate detailed study of this music and its sources, and to assure their permanent preservation. [read more]

project: Pacific Pathways: Multiplying Contexts for the Forster ('Cook-Voyage') Collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum

Comprising 185+ artefacts obtained on James Cook’s second voyage of discovery from 1772 to 1775, the Forster Collection is one of the great collections of Pacific ethnography. Between 1995 and 2001, I gathered together in a database all the information held within the Museum about each object in the collection. This work culminated in the launch of a website devoted to the collection at . The present project was concerned with understanding the ways in which the Forster Collection is important today, especially for members of ‘source’ communities. [read more]

project: Hofmeister XIX

Research on 19th-century music is hampered by insufficient bibliographical control of printed music. However, the Leipzig publisher Hofmeister published monthly or bi-monthly reports (Monatsberichte) on music publications that permit datings of large numbers of prints after 1829 when the series began: these constitute the single largest inventory of music prints produced in the 19th century. The Monatsberichte are limited by the form in which they were set out and by the fact that no single run of the series exists anywhere in the world. [read more]

The history of nineteenth-century music is on the verge of being rewritten. There is emerging, in addition to a chronicle of composers and works, and of a thick description of musical cultures and institutions, the possibility of writing the music history of the century in terms of its reception of composers of the previous century and before. project: Repertoire International de Litterature Musicale (UK operations)

Compilation of bibliographical information and abstracts of all scholarly writings on music published in all formats in the UK. These are sent electronically to RILM head quarters in New York to be added to the international database available by subscription to institutions and individuals. This phase of the project (RILM-UK 1999-2004) has brought the UK coverage of monographs up to date, thereby ensuring that a great part of the strengths and diversity of UK musicology is properly represented within, and made available to, the national and international community.
