Job purpose:

You will play an important role in a dynamic team supporting the government’s initiative to encourage departments to publish more of its non-personal data to facilitate the re-use of public sector information.

Your job is to be responsible for performing data quality assurance; this involves checking metadata provided by government departments, as well as supporting the work of the Web Archiving team by quality checking datasets captured as part of the UK Government Web Archive. Reporting into the Government Data Manager you will provide project support.

Role and responsibilities:

• Quality testing of archived websites using a tracking system (JIRA) to an agreed service level

• Working with other members of the Web Archiving team, particularly the Web Archivist to alert them to any issues with the quality of the archived datasets

• Quality checking metadata provided for the data metadata repository against agreed standards, in a timely and accurate way. Documenting the flow of metadata from government departments and providing both verbal and written feedback to government departments on the quality of the metadata

• Escalating issues with quality to the Government Data Manager for discussion with government stakeholders

• Managing project records

• Maintaining records in UK Government Website Database

• Other project and service support as required, including taking minutes, organising meetings and briefings, writing up workshops

Person specification:

• Understanding of metadata and its part in both resource discovery and preservation

• Demonstrable understanding of web archiving

• Demonstrable ability to manage own workload

• Demonstrable interest in and understanding of information science and information technology, including online service delivery

• Interest in/experience of web archiving

• Good oral and written communication skills

• Ability to work productively as part of a team

• Ability to work under pressure to achieve targets

• Experience of digital archiving software tools and methodologies

• Experience in quality assurance work

• Previous experience in web archiving field

• Understanding of archival cataloguing systems

• Understanding of the issues of long-term storage of complex data

• Experience of delivering archival services across the web

Location: Kew, West London

Working arrangement: Full time, Fixed term Appointment until 31st March 2011 with the possibility of extension.
