Video editing

Refers to the techniques used to manipulate moving image data into a defined structure. Linear editing is where the video is edited in scene order, and was performed when footage only existed in a videotape format. In non-linear editing, which is usually used for digital video files, any frame can be accessed easily, and edited in any order.

Editing tasks include putting individual frames in the correct order, adjusting transitions between scenes, synchronising the visual aspects with the soundtrack and adding music, text (such as titles or credits) and special effects. In some cases, animation is superimposed onto live action footage.

Most professional non-linear editing programs (NLEs) are able to edit video in an uncompressed format, although this also depends on the disk space available on the computer. In some cases, video compression is necessary for the editing process; care must be taken to ensure that there is no reduction in quality.

After editing, the video file is rendered, and then distributed, e.g. by writing it to a CD or DVD, or by streaming it on the internet.
