Virtual world modelling

The design and creation of a three dimensional environment, often undertaken with proprietary tools distributed with video games. Usually the term ‘virtual worlds’ refers to multi-user online environments. Some virtual worlds are designed to simulate a real place, others can be more abstract or fantasy-related. In more realistic worlds, terrain is sometimes based on satellite photographs. Virtual worlds can also be designed as ‘virtual globes’, whether they are intended to simulate the Earth, or another planet.

In a three-dimensional virtual world, users represent themselves using avatars, which they use to interact with each other. Communication between users can be audio, visual or text based.

As well as for entertainment purposes (e.g. MMORPGs – Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), virtual worlds can also be used for training, instructional simulation, collaboration, conferencing and education. This is particularly useful as in a virtual world, these scenarios are not restricted by real-world constraints such as physical space, cost and location. In particular, 3-D virtual worlds are often used by schools and universities for language learning.

Research is being carried out into the creation of virtual worlds, and how people behave, interact, and access and share information, within them.
