project: James Mill's common place books

A three-year Collaborative Doctoral Award to transcribe and digitally publish James Mill's common place books, currently held in the archive of the London Library. The project is also researching James Mill's intellectual history, particularly the period of his close relationship with Jeremy Bentham (1808-1832). Because Mill was raised and educated in Scotland, there is also a significant Scottish Enlightenment context to the project. [read more]

project: William Godwin's Diary

The project provides a digital edition of the diary of William Godwin (1756-1836). Godwin’s diary consists of 32 octavo notebooks. The first entry is for 6 April 1788 and the final entry is for 26 March 1836, shortly before he died. The diary is a resource of immense importance to researchers of history, politics, literature, and women’s studies. [read more]

project: An electronic corpus of 15th century Castilian cancionero manuscripts; towards completion of the Dutton project

When Brian Dutton died prematurely in his 60th year (1994), he had completed his magnum opus, the seven-volume El cancionero castellano del siglo XV, in book format (Salamanca: Universidad, 1990-91), but although he had used electronic preparation of texts, he was unable to fulfil the dream of conversion to electronic usage. We can now present the online website version of the Dutton project of courtly verse, alongside our own project of the longer moralistic, didactic and religious Castilian verse of the fifteenth century. project: Online calendar of the correspondence of Charles Darwin

The web resource created through the AHRB-funded initiative `An online calendar of the correspondence of Charles Darwin' and launched in 2002, was based on a revised and updated edition of the printed Calendar to the Correspondence of Charles Darwin: 1821 – 1882 (Cambridge University Press, 1994), but incorporated further substantial additions and corrections. The book summarises every letter that the naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-82) was then known to have sent or received and is a standard reference work for scholars. [read more]

project: Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture in Britain and Ireland 1851-1951

Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture in Britain and Ireland 1851-1951 is the first comprehensive study of sculptors, related businesses and trades investigated in the context of creative collaborations, art infrastructures, professional networks and cultural geographies. The primary outcome of Mapping Sculpture 1851-1951 will be an open access online database on the GU website with postings of articles analyzing the results of the research. The database launch will coincide with exhibitions in the V&A's Gilbert Bayes Gallery and a collections display at the Henry Moore Institute. [read more]

project: Sharing Ancient Wisdoms (SAWS)

The aim of the project is to use new technology to present and analyse the tradition of wisdom literatures in Greek and Arabic. Throughout antiquity and the middle ages collections of wise or useful sayings were created and circulated, as a practical response to the cost and inaccessibility of full texts in a manuscript age; the project will focus on those which collected moral and social advice. The compilation of these collections formed a crucial route by which ideas of reasonable behaviour and good conduct were disseminated over a huge area, and over many centuries. [read more]

project: CESAR IMAGES: a searchable online repository of French theatre images 1600-1800

The primary aim was to produce a single, coherent listing of all known theatre and related performances in France between 1600 and 1800, searchable by date, title, location, genre and by the names of the people involved in whatever capacity. The database was to have an interactive web interface. The second aim was to make the entire structure bi-directional, i.e. to take advantage of the same web interface to permit members of the international scholarly community, after a simple registration procedure, to annotate, comment upon, extend and correct any field in the database. project: Staging Exile, Migration and Diaspora in Hispanic Theatre and Performance Cultures

The project focuses on Spanish Republican Exile (SRE) theatre and performance, aiming to recover, represent and help to preserve the full range of representation of the experience of exile in theatrical and performance texts and paratexts (histories, memoirs, reviews, criticism, photographs and audiovisual recordings), by contributing to the creation, updating and maintenance of the Centre for the Study of Hispanic Exile's bibliographical database and stand-alone web resource on SRE, and by bringing together key researchers on Spanish Exile Theatre and Performance in a series of panels within [read more]

project: The Cairo Genizah manuscripts: Taylor-Schechter Old Series and the Mosseri Collection

The project aims to complete the cataloguing and detailed description of the Old Series of the Taylor-Schechter Cairo Genizah Collection and a substantial proportion of the Jacques Mosseri Genizah Collection. The T-S Collection consists of approx. 193,000 medieval (and early modern) Jewish manuscripts recovered from a storeroom (Genizah) in Old Cairo one hundred years ago, and is an unparalleled resource for the study of medieval Judaism, Islam and the history of the Mediterranean and Near East in the Middle Ages. project: Germanic possessive -s : an empirical, historical and theoretical study

Two much-debated questions in recent theoretical linguistics concern the historical origin of grammatical markers and their synchronic status. Researchers have adduced key evidence for both from the evolution of English possessive -s and the related but subtly different constructions in Swedish and Dutch. What has not to date been attempted, and what the present proposal offers, is a systematic synchronic and diachronic comparison of these constructions across all three languages. [read more]
